Course Description

This course is aimed at business users or operations support personnel who may need to write quick reports to interrogate mainframe data using CA-Easytrieve. The language incorporates many built in features to enable reports to be formatted simply and quickly.

Pre-requisites

Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide the programmer with the necessary skills required to access various file types, manipulate data, produce reports and create files. The various 'automatic' features of the language will be covered in detail enabling the delegate to quickly develop maintainable programs.

On completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • read sequential or VSAM files
  • format detail and summary reports using automatic options
  • produce name and address labels
  • use edit masks such as floating money symbols
  • specify conditional logic
  • test for special values such as zeros and spaces
  • perform powerful calculations
  • manipulate variables
  • use code held in macros

Customisation

For on-site courses (i.e. at your premises), we are more than happy to tailor the course agenda to suit your exact requirements. In many cases, we are able to build your in-house standards and naming conventions into the delivered course.

Course Format

The course uses a combination of lectures and practical exercises to ensure familiarity with the basic reporting statements. The exercises are carried out throughout the course, using features introduced during the lecture sessions. The programs are run against a sample employee file.

On completion of this course students will be ready to start the development of application programs using CA-Easytrieve to produce reports against mainframe sequential and VSAM files.

The comprehensive Student Guide supplied is fully indexed, serving as a useful reference tool long after the course has finished. Delegates will also be able to access a free help-line with technical questions relating to topics covered on the course.
